In
2006, I ran unopposed in the primary for the 54th
assembly district. The seat was then occupied by Democrat, Betty
Karnette. There has been an unofficial agreement in place for many
years between the parties whereby Republican Legislators agree not
to support a Republican Nominee running against an incumbent
Democrat and in turn, Democratic Legislators will not support a
Democratic Nominee against an incumbent Republican. In a year when
republicans took a beating at the polls, I was able to pull in over
45,000 votes in the 54th District (nearly 40%). This
was, the highest % of any republican assembly candidate in Los
Angeles County running against an incumbent! At one point in the
campaign, the democrats were so fearful of losing the seat that the
San Diego Democratic Central Committee funneled $40,000 into
Karnette’s campaign.
This
year the 54th AD is an open seat. Even with the great
support that I had built, the ‘entrenched’ republicans, campaign
consultants, and lobbyists have gone out to find a candidate to run
against me in the primary. The campaign consultants obviously want
to get paid and the lobbyists want someone that they can influence.
As a principled conservative Republican, they would have less
influence with me.
This
same group of Republicans will be repeating the same mistake they
made in 2005. In a special election in the 53rd AD, the
party did not back Greg Hill, the 2004 Nominee. Instead, their
backing went to an individual who was not involved with local
Republicans and had to start from scratch to build voter support.
The caveat here is that this candidate had money. L.A. County
Supervisor, Don Knabe, agreed that Greg Hill should have been backed
by the party. The supported candidate went on to lose the race
and received a lower percentage of the vote in 2006 than I did.
